Lisbon Coast

Explore the vibrant capital of Portugal and its magnificent coastal surroundings

Spend a week exploring the beautiful sun-soaked Lisbon Coast, where you can have the best of both worlds as you relax on the beach and take part in some interesting sightseeing tours. Known for its sandy beaches, excellent hotels, a selection of golf courses and a vibrant atmosphere, Estoril is an upmarket and cosmopolitan resort and a perfect base for your escorted holiday, offering a variety of recreation activities ranging from a motor-racing circuit to the largest casino in Europe. Developed as an international tourist centre in the early 20th century, it manages to retain its traditional charms while offering a modern array of conveniences.

The nearby town of Cascais with its trendy little shops, restaurants and a new twinkling marina still retains its original fishing village atmosphere and an unhurried air. Enjoy life at a slow pace exploring museums, colourful markets and antiques fairs or fascinating rock formations such as Boca do Inferno (“Mouth of Hell”), where high waves crash into gigantic caves carved out of the rock by the sea, causing an awe-inspiring noise, or watch the local “daredevils” sail or windsurf along the world famous Guincho beach known for some of the best waves in Europe.

Our guided tour of the Portuguese capital will show you the highlights of Lisbon’s downtown district, the romantic Alfama and the Moorish Quarter, as well as St. James Castle, the Tower of Belem and the Monastery of the Hieronymites by the river Tagus of Tejo. Enjoy lunch in one of the city’s many cafes or restaurants and spend the rest of the afternoon following the charming vintage tram and funicular lines and exploring the quaint streets, medieval neighbourhoods and scenic views off the White City’s many hilltops.

The trip to magical Sintra, a region of great natural beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the highlight of the tour. A town steeped in history with prehistoric, Roman, Moorish and more recent Romantic influences, Sintra never fails to impress visitors with its fairy-tale-like palaces and fancy villas, tucked beneath lush gardens and swaying hills, well deserving the title of “Glorious Eden” lent to it by the poet Lord Byron. Its extensive palace and museum collections add to the town’s magnificent cultural heritage. Continental Europe’s most Westerly point, cliffs of Cabo da Roca, offer jaw-dropping views of the ocean and magnificent coastal surroundings.

The tour offers plenty of free time on the last day to be spent basking in the Portuguese sun, relaxing by the poolside, strolling on the beautiful sandy beaches, further exploring the charming towns and villages, admiring landscapes, shopping or visiting Catholic Marian shrines and homes of visionaries of apparitions during an optional day trip to Fatima.
