Sample Itinerary
Day 1 Munich/Altötting
Flight from Dublin to Munich, where we will be met by a Joe Walsh Tour’s representative. Travel to Altöting. En Route we will visit Aschau am Inn, where Pope Benedict XVI lived, attended primary school and received his first holy communion. We will then continue to Marktl, the Pope’s birthplace, where we can visit the local museum and his Baptismal font.
In Altöting we will visit the shrine of Our Lady, the Pilgrim’s Chapel and attend Holy Mass at the Chapel of Mercy (Gnaden Kapele). Dinner and overnight in Altötting.
Day 2 Altötting/Traunstein/Chiemsee
After breakfast we depart Altötting for Traunstein where the pope attended school. Here we will visit the monastery and St. Oswald church where he celebrated his first mass. Continue to Lake Chiemsee, where we will take a boat trip and visit Herrenchiemsee Castle and the Frauenchimsee Monastery. Dinner and overnight in Prien am Chimsee.
Day 3 Chiemsee/Munich
Today we depart for Munich, the capital of Bavaria. We will visit the Catholic university where pope Benedict XVI studied, the church of our lady (Frauenkirche) where he was consecrated Bishop and nominated a Cardinal, St. Martin’s Church Moosach where he was priest and the church of Hl. Blut Bogenhausen where he was chaplain in the early 1950s. We will also visit some of Munich interesting sights. Dinner and overnight in Munich.
Day 4 Munich/Oberammergau/Neuscwanstein Castle/Munich
After breakfast we will depart Munich and travel to Southern Germany. Our first stop will be Oberammergau, home of the century old passion play. Here we will visit the world famous Passionspielhaus theatre, the venue of the passion play. We will then continue towards Füssen where we will visit Neuschwanstein castle, the inspiration for Disney’s castle. Following the visit to the castle we will continue to Ottobeuern Abbey and visit the chapel of St.Benedict, the abbey museum and attend Holy Mass. Return to Munich, dinner and overnight in Munich.
Day 5 Munich/Freising/Regensburg
After breakfast, we depart for Freising, where Pope Benedict XVI studied and became bishop of the archdiocese of Munich and Freising. We will visit the cathedral of St. Korbinian where he was ordained to the priesthood and the theological university of Freising, where he was a professor. We will continue to Regensburg where he was also professor for a time. We will also have a short stop in Regensburg-Pentling to visit the house of the Ratzinger Family. Dinner and overnight in Regensburg.
Day 6 Regensburg
Today we will enjoy a tour of the city of Regensburg, with its Roman period buildings, as well as the old Medieval city Centre with its beautiful churches of all periods and especially the world famous Gothic style cathedral. We will attend Holy Mass at the Cathedral and we’ll also visit the University of Regensburg where the Pope was professor, Dinner and Overnight in Regensburg.
Day 7 Regensburg/Munich
Following breakfast we will travel to Munich for our return flight to Dublin.
