Ayers Rock is a renowned emblem of
Australia and remains a sacred site for the Aboriginal people. The
sheer size and ambience of this monolith make it easy to understand how
it, and the land surrounding it, has such huge spiritual significance
for the Aboriginal people. It is 9.3kms in circumference, and the
icy-green and grey vegetation at its massive base offer a refuge for
wildlife. As the sun moves through the sky throughout the day you will
see the rock display a range of changing colours, which enhance the
mystery and beauty of the structure.
The Olga’s, about 32 kms west of
Uluru are a collection of 36 steep, rounded, golden-brown domes that
cover more than 3,500 hectares and their site is also considered
sacred. There are a number of cultural and geologically themed walks
through the domes and their surrounding gorges and valleys, which will
give you a wonderful appreciation for the majesty of the structures.
Sunrise at the Olga’s is a magical experience and we recommend that you
take at least 2 days to fully explore Yulara and its surrounds.
Yulara is the purpose built resort town housing the hotels and services for visitors to Ayers Rock and The
Olga’s. It is located approximately 20kms from the Rock and there is a
good choice of accommodation options from 3 star hotels and
self-catering studios to 5 star boutique hotels and unique deluxe
tent-style properties. Facilities include souvenir shops, a
supermarket, cinema, information centre and numerous restaurants.
Kings Canyon is an exhilarating blend
of craggy rock structures and imposing cliff faces with steep gullies
and an oasis named the Garden of Eden. There are stunning walks through
the canyon offering spectacular views.
Alice Springs is a quaint outback town and acts as the commercial centre for the surrounding region. It
is home to the School of the Air, which educates children in isolated
areas by radio. Alice also acts as the base for the Flying Doctors of
the region and is a major centre for Aboriginal culture. It is ideally located for visiting these some of the other awe-inspiring
and colourful natural wonders of the region including the MacDonnell
Ranges, Simpson’s Gap, Standley Chasm and Palm Valley. |
