The journey down this road continues to seduce the travelers time and again because of its religious nature, its historical continuity and the large cultural heritage ubiquitous throughout cities, towns, villages, convents, bridges and chapels.

WAY OF ST. JAMES

Original Way from Oviedo
The first known route to the tomb of St. James the Apostle, the Original Way starts in Oviedo and passes through various Asturian villages and Lugo before joining the French Way at Melide.

Northern Way from Irún
One of the longest of the ancient pilgrim routes, it runs for some 825 kilometres from the French border at Irún, through San Sebastián, Bilbao and Santander to join the French Way at Arzua.

French Way from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port
The main route of the Way of St. James stretches from St. Jean-Pied-du-Port, near Biarritz in France, to Santiago de Compostela. It has been used by large numbers of pilgrims for at least 800 years

English Way from Ferrol
English and Irish pilgrims arrived by boat at Ferrol to start their walking journey towards the tomb of St. James the Apostle.

Portuguese Way from Lisbon
Numerous routes can be followed depending on the starting point in Portugal but the main itinerary passes through Oporto and enters Spain via the Valença do Miño-Tui bridge. Pilgrims may prefer to start closer to the Spanish border at Valença and Tui.
