Destination of the Month: Salzburg
Do you love city breaks but are tired of the usual destinations constantly being pitched to you by travel agents? Salzburg in Austria is a slightly less obvious place to visit on a city break but offers tonnes of charm and beauty.
Salzburg is located on the border of Germany and is surrounded by picturesque mountains. It has the best of both worlds; experience the busy city where you’ll find traditional Austrian cuisine in restaurants, daily showings of the Sound of Music and live music around every corner or escape to the surrounding mountains where there are some small towns and plenty of hiking routes.
It’s no wonder this beautiful place has been named as our destination of the month. So, we want to share with you 5 reasons why we love Salzburg...
1. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe
This city is surrounded by mountains each way you turn; it does not lack breathtaking scenery.
Salzburg is filled with everything necessary to make the perfect city break, but, it also offers some quieter towns nearby in the mountains such as St. Gilgen and Anif. These are easily accessible by public transport and can be incorporated into your itinerary as a day trip!
Buildings in the city of Salzburg are filled with colour, making each street more visually pleasing than the last. There is no preferred time of the year to travel to Salzburg. It’s true that anytime of the year the city is still as breathtaking as ever.
2. Music around every corner
You can truly sense the influence of Mozart all over the city of Salzburg. As Mozart’s home, there is music playing all over the city. Both his birthplace and residence have now been made into museums and give an interesting oversight into the life he lived. You will find mentions of Mozart everywhere during a visit to Salzburg, including on food, cups and clothing!
Salzburg is also the location at which the Sound of Music was filmed. There are daily showings of the movie, tours to the original shooting locations and they’re even hoping to build a museum solely dedicated to the Sound of Music.
Not only was the movie shot here, but the Trapp family also lived in the city of Salzburg. The Sound of Music was made in memory of Maria von Trapp, the story of the Trapp family choir singers. This is the perfect spot for any Sound of Music fan!
3. Delicious Austrian cuisine
Did you know that Austrian cuisine is often associated with Vietnamese cuisine? Austrian cuisine consists of many delicious dishes that are bursting with flavour. Whilst in Salzburg, we recommend indulging in some Mozartkugel balls, Wiener schnitzel and apple strudel.
4. Beautiful Baroque Architecture
The streets are filled with beautiful architecture and colourful buildings – perfect for photo ops! The picturesque old town of Salzburg was even named a member of UNESCO World Heritage in 1997.
The Baroque style buildings make Salzburg stand out from other European destinations as they fill the city skyline with beauty. Many of the buildings were built during the 17th and 18th century. Inspired by Italian designs, the buildings are similar to those seen in Rome; it has even been dubbed by Culture Trip as ‘Rome of the North’!
5. City of Romance
When combining all of the positive aspects that Salzburg has to offer, overall, it makes the perfect destination for a romantic getaway.
Salzburg is perfect as a short city break for couples. Sign your love locks together before leaving them to hang on Makartsteg Bridge, enjoy an enchanting horse and carriage ride along the streets of the city, or take a step outside and witness the sensational pink sunsets that Salzburg boasts about.
