Medjugorje, a parish chosen by Our Lady

Tucked into the hills of the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Medjugorje is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites for Catholics in the world and the third most important apparition site in Europe.

The tiny village in the Balkans attained worldwide fame in the early eighties, when on the 24 June 1981, two local children Mirjana Dragicević and Ivanka Ivanković reported to have seen the Virgin Mary. Only one day later the apparition was reported by four additional children - Marija Pavlović, Jakov Colo, Vicka Ivanković and Ivan Dragicevic. They claimed to have witnessed a white form with a child in her arms, on the hill Crnica. Regular appearances have been claimed by the visionaries ever since. The visionaries Marija, Vicka, and Ivan report to be continuously receiving daily apparitions of Our Lady to this day, while Mirjana's, Ivanka's, and Jakov's reported apparitions seem to occur only once a year. Every visionary is said to receive ten secrets from Our Lady, but they are only allowed to share short snippets of information about them.

One of the most important messages that pilgrims continuously seem to witness in Medjugorje and which has been reported several times by the local priest and the villagers alike is the word "mir" written in the sky above the cross upon Mount Krizevac, another one of Medjugorje's sacred hills. "Mir" means peace in Croatian, the language spoken by the locals in this region.

The path to the hill top of the Apparition Hill is dotted with bronze reliefs which were placed here to represent the mysteries of the Rosary. On the way up to the site of the apparitions, a large wooden cross was erected to mark the place where Our Lady is reported to have given her first call for peace on the third day of her apparitions. At the very point where the apparitions are said to have taken place, a statue of the Queen of Peace was placed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the apparitions. At the foot of Apparition Hill, the Blue Cross marks the place where the visionary Ivan and his prayer group have been gathering regularly since July 4th 1982. A Way of The Cross leads from Mount Krizevac, or the Cross Mountain. It is marked with bronze sculptures, the work of an Italian sculptor Carmelo Puzzlo, which depict the life and death of Our Lord. The Apparitions of Our Lady are said to be witnessed by pilgrims nightly at 6:40pm. They are accompanied by a parish Mass in Croatian, which is translated for foreign pilgrims.

Millions of pilgrims come to witness the apparitions and miracles of Medjugorje and meet with one of the visionaries and members of the local religious community each year. Most people seem to experience the same sense of peace, communion with God and Our Lady as well as tight spiritual kinship and connection to one another.

Over the past 30 years, Joe Walsh Tours has witnessed the development of the town of Medjugorje into one of the most important spiritual sites in Europe.
