Introduction

The Galician capital is Santiago de Compostela is synonymous with the Camino, and is the final destination on the ancient pilgrimage route. Many people walk for weeks, to reach this historically significant city and collect their Camino certificate. The jewel in the city’s crown is most definitely the Cathedral, the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, the apostle of Jesus Christ. Santiago de Compostela has been linked with St. James since 1063.

On this short break, you will take in the festivities of the annual Feast of St. James on July 25th. The city of Santiago knows how to celebrate with this fantastic event! In the two weeks leading up to the day, there are exhibitions, concerts, drama productions and street entertainment. Closer to the event itself, there is something on almost every night in the two mains squares. On the evening of 24th July, in the Plaza del Obradoiro, are the Fuegos del Apóstol – an incredible display of pyrotechnics that sees the side of the cathedral dramatically illuminated at midnight. The feast day itself includes many official celebrations and processions, the most important of which is an official Mass which is attended by representatives of the Galician government and often by members of the Spanish Royal family.

The Botafumeiro will be swung during mass on the 25th July. Only 11 days of each year the Botafumeiro is swung for free, the rest of the year it costs €600!

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Wednesday 22nd July 2020
    Make your way to Dublin airport for your flight to Santiago. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy dinner with your group and rep.

  • Day 2: Thursday 23rd July 2020
    This morning you will be taken by coach to Monte de Gozo on the edge of the city. For those who have walked the Camino route to Santiago, Monte de Gozo is where they get a first view of the city and the Cathedrals famous spires. You will have the opportunity to walk a short section of the camino leading to Monte de Gozo, or you can simply spend some time taking in the atmosphere and stunning scenery from the hilltop. Some might even choose to walk down into the city, however, the coach is available to drop you back if you would prefer. After some free time for lunch in the city, the group will come together again for an afternoon walking tour of Santiago, in order to learn more about the city’s famous history and its stunning landmarks.

  • Day 3: Friday 24th July 2020
    Today you will have the day free to explore at your own pace. While some may choose to enjoy relaxing in the numerous coffee shops and parks, or strolling the beautiful cobbled streets, others may opt to go further afield. Day trips to Finisterre, the Cies Islands and Vigo are popular options which can be booked through local operators. Your Joe Walsh Tours representative can assist you with making a booking.   • Day 4 - St James Day: Saturday 25th July 2020
    Today, the Feast of Saint James, the streets of Santiago de Compostela come alive once more! The city is full of people watching the processions of different carnival groups, papier-mâché cabezudos and many Galician pipers. The dancing, music, eating and drink continues well into the next morning! Don’t forget to try some oysters or scallops, as Galicians believe that eating these on July 25th will ensure that the following year is full of wealth and health. The feast day itself also includes many official celebrations, the most important of which is an official Mass which is attended by representatives of the Galician government and often by members of the Spanish Royal family.

  • Day 5: Sunday 26th July 2020
    On your last morning you will have some more time to soak up the atmosphere of the city, as the return flight to Dublin is expected to be around 5pm, so the group will be transferred to the airport around 2pm.
