Muscat | Joe Walsh Tours

Please note that these are tailor made itineraries and not escorted tours.

Muscat, the capital city of Oman, is the second largest city in the Arabian Gulf and offers world-class hotels and glitzy restaurants, ornate mosques and ancient stone city walls, combined with traditional Arabian culture and charm. It is the perfect choice for a relaxing break in truly deluxe surroundings.

As you cruise to your hotel along the state of- the-art highways, lined with well manicured lawns and trees, your first impression of Muscat is one of style and a cosmopolitan sophistication. Delve a little deeper though and you will find a rich and intriguing 6,000-year old history. Despite the modern development Muscat city has faithfully preserved its old-world character with many ancient citadels, mosques, towers and forts dotting the landscape, as well as a scattering of traditional houses, cobbled alleys and small shops and markets amidst the ultra-modern shopping malls.

Hotels in Muscat are very modern and extremely luxurious, with deluxe facilities and extravagant amenities. The service standards are exceptional and the décor is glamorous and sophisticated. The choice of cuisine in the hotel restaurants is excellent and the range of facilities second-to-none.

Whether you want to sit by the pool and lap up the luxury or get out and see the sights, Muscat offers a variety of options for the most discerning holidaymaker. If you feel like exploring beyond your hotel, there are numerous excellent daytrips or overnight trips to consider. In particular we recommend a daytrip with a difference into the desert to discover the unique beauty of Oman’s renowned Wadis. These dried up riverbeds can be found in the mountain valleys and are lush green oasis’s of palm trees, native grasses and flowering vegetation. Travelling by 4wd, the terrain can be very bumpy and gives a real sense of adventure, once there you will discover deep, cool pools, which are safe to swim in and thoroughly refreshing.

A visit to the Grand Mosque is a must. This imposing structure is open to tourists at selected times throughout the week and offers an insight into the religious culture of the local Omanis. In addition why not take the time to discover the main Souq, easily accessible from your hotel and offering a huge variety of souvenirs and wares, it is an enchanting place to wander around and an excellent spot to pick up mementos of your holiday.

Top Tips

  • Shopping: In addition to the designer goods available in the modern malls, there are other great items to purchase in Muscat. The local Souq’s are a treasure throve for unique and traditional articles. Choose from a variety of excellent quality items, from local dishdasha’s - the colourful national costume of Oman, to ornate handcrafted jewellery, hand-woven rugs and wall hangings or, for an exotic gift, why not buy the local frankincense. Silver and gold in particular are a good buy and can also be purchased in the big shopping malls and small jewellery boutiques as well as in the Souqs.
